The Vilamoura Lawn Bowls Club was established in 1993 by Senhor Amadeu Gil da Rocha - owner and Managing Director, and his wife Janeth. Both are international bowlers, and are well known throughout the bowling world. The club boasts two championship size grass greens that have twice hosted the European Championships. It is considered by many leading authorities in the sport to have the best grass greens in Continental Europe, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious bowling complexes in the world. The two championship size greens (fourteen rinks in all), have natural grass (Penn cross creeping bent grass Agrostis stolonifera) from Oregon State University, USA. 

The club is set in pleasant surroundings with flowers, shrubs and trees. It has a large car park and an attractive bar and refreshment area, where light meals can be served as well as hot and cold drinks.

The Vilamoura Lawn Bowls Club has about 24 members all year round, some Portuguese, but mainly British living in the Algarve, plus circa 30 bowlers who come to the Algarve for a long stay in winter time. Some of the club's members make part of the Portuguese national team, and have competed in the European Teams Championship, involving twelve countries. The president of the club is an active member, and also Past President of the European Bowls Union.

It is when the outdoor greens in the UK are closed that the Vilamoura Lawn Bowls Club receives most of its visitors. The months of October, November, February, March, April and May are the busiest periods. As many as 150 bowlers play daily at the venue during those months. Many competitive players combine a pleasant Winter Break with the chance to practice on grass greens in readiness for the upcoming outdoor campaign back home. However the club is also open throughout the summer months of July, August and September.

Bowling under the sun, and on first-class traditional grass greens continues to make Vilamoura Bowls complex a popular overseas destination.
